Curriculum Vitae
Jan Earney MSc CertEd FRSA
Following a varied teaching career covering a range of age groups from Pre-school to Further Education, I returned to the Primary sector when I resumed teaching full time following a period bringing up my family. I have experience of many different schools in a variety of circumstances from advantaged to challenging. I became a Head in 1999 following a short Deputy Headship and a term as Acting Head. During my time as a Head I have been seconded to two Interim Headships at the request of the LA. Both Interim positions were in Junior Schools. One school was in Special Measures and situated in a challenging area, the other served a more advantaged area, yet was struggling to appoint a Head.
As Head of Weybourne Infant School I took the school from an underperforming school to one that was good with outstanding features. I have invested heavily in developing staff and increasing capacity with the result that, when requested to take on another school, I was able to leave Weybourne safe in the knowledge that it would continue to perform well. I was also involved within the local Confederation of Schools, regularly working across local schools to introduce a coaching strategy and undertaking a formal coaching qualification at the same time.
My achievements and strengths include:
•The ability to maintain a strategic overview
•A belief in distributed Leadership leading to increased capacity across a whole staff
•The ability to quickly establish professional, yet supportive relationships
•Being able to focus relentlessly on outcomes
•Experience of initiating and maintaining rigorous tracking systems within different schools in different situations
•Experience of managing sometimes difficult and pressurised staff facing challenging circumstances
•Supporting and managing underperforming staff
Career History:
Headteacher: Weybourne Infant School, Farnham 1998 – 2011
Weybourne serves a diverse area on the Hampshire/Surrey border between Farnham and Aldershot. It is a small, 4 class school that has become increasingly popular over the last 10 years because of its family feel, supportive ethos and focus on the individual. Standards have risen over my time as Head, but never to the detriment of the well-being of the pupils. There is a strong partnership with Parents.
‘This is a school that is not standing still and continues to strive to improve. The school's ambitions and its strong drive for improvement are firmly embedded, with members of staff working together well to ensure that priorities are tackled quickly. Self-evaluation is well established.‘ Ofsted January 2011.
Interim Headships:
Watchetts Junior School (while in special measures) Autumn Term 2005
Serving a diverse and challenging area of Camberley, Surrey.
The school came out of Special Measures 6 weeks after I had handed over to the new substantive Head. HMI commented on the smooth transition.
‘Leadership by the interim headteacher is very good. She has rapidly built authentic relationships and established effective structures and systems to drive school improvement. Her secure understanding of the schools strengths and weaknesses means that development work is accurately prioritised. Expectations are clearly communicated. Evaluation and feedback are extremely rigorous; and have already resulted in a reduction in unsatisfactory teaching.‘ HMI Dec 2005
